MAJOR MAKER ‘PEOPLE CARRIER’ EP READIES FOR LAUNCH
Toronto Indie-rockers preview new songs on-line, prepare for Halloween freak-out
With their explosive track Rollercoaster blazing through both the indie and mainstream music scene, Toronto’s Major Maker follow-through with a hotly anticipated new EP entitled People Carrier, scheduled for digital release on October 30th (iTunes) and physical release on November 6th (MajorMaker/EMI).
Major Maker took Canada by force this summer when two new songs, Rollercoaster and Talk To You, were featured in national television campaigns for Maynards Candy and Telus, respectively. Propelled to radio by Toronto’s influential 102.1 The Edge, Rollercoaster debuted at #57 on the Canadian Billboard Hot 100 Chart (2nd highest debut after Kanye West), # 2 on iTunes Rock Chart and crossed over to both Top 40 and Hot AC radio (where Major Maker were selected Chum Radio’s ‘Emerging Artist’ for September). The video debuted on Yahoo Music and was added ‘out of the box’ to medium rotation at both MuchMusic and MuchMoreMusic.
Soon to be released, hot on the heels of Rollercoaster, is the 6-track EP entitled People Carrier.
The advent of People Carrier builds upon Major Maker’s distinctive sound. Blending musical influences that range from Bowie to The Beatles to Icelandic Folk-Pop, Major Maker reels us in on a familiar pop level. Last Goodbye and I’m In Love build upon the melodic groove of Rollercoaster, a classic sound retrofit for today’s edgy intelligent rock culture. Not Moving At All weaves a catchy synth line into a full-fledged sonic assault, destined to become the “break-up ‘n’ move-on” anthem for 2008. The Cause, a piano-vocal ode to relationships everywhere, strips down Major Maker to the bare bones. The Rollercoaster Smalls Sins remix deconstructs the EP’s lead-off track, then builds it back up into an edgy, pulsating synth-rock celebration.
Major Maker’s huge sound is expertly harnessed by acclaimed engineer John O’Mahony (Coldplay, U2, Prince). The EP was produced by Steve Krecklo and Major Maker and mastered by Andy Vandette of NYC’s acclaimed Masterdisk Studios.
MM fans don’t have to wait for the EP release to hear the new material. Starting this Thursday, October 18 until the digital release on October 30, a new song from People Carrier will be made available for streaming every 4 days on the bands myspace website (www.myspace.com/majormaker). In addition, the iTunes release will include an additional exclusive Rollercoaster remix by Sofia Scandalli.
Major Maker and friends will celebrate the EP release with a Halloween show in Toronto Wednesday October 31 at The Mod Club. The show, a double-bill with Toronto’s Small Sins, will see the two bands (who are friendly yet fiercely competitive) duke it out during a pre-show Halloween battle. The stakes are high as the disgraced loser must hit the stage first. Ouch! The night will be hosted by The Wizard of Rock. Fans are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes and get their freak on (generally speaking). More tour dates are in the works and will be announced shortly.
At the helm of the Major Maker space-ship are Todor Kobakov and Lindy Vopnfjord. Bulgarian-born Kobakov is a classically trained composer with a degree in performance piano from U of T. Recent projects include string arrangements for Stars, Metric, Emily Haines, Jason Collett, and Sarah Slean, as well as touring duties for both Emily Haines and Small Sins. An in-demand film and TV composer, Todor was recently commissioned to create the original score for the upcoming Vodafone campaign featuring Oscar winner Dame Judy Dench set for a 2008 debut across the UK. Lindy is a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter of Icelandic descent with three solo albums under his belt, with a penchant for killer hooks and a fierce live performance. Major Maker’s stadium-sized sound is created live with the help of bassist Thom D’Arcy (Small Sins) guitarist Ian LeFeuvre (Starling, Jim Bryson) and drummer John Ocerbian (Sarah Harmer).
